The
Championship Course, a par-72 that plays all of 7,013 yards,
is a visual delight at every turn, with shimmering lakes setting
the boundaries on several holes and scenic wetlands on many
more. Some of the fairways are raised along the water and wide
open, while others roll quietly through forests of lowland pine.
Many of the greens are bunkered right and left, but Jones has
left the approaches open to encourage more bump-and-run attacks
on the flag stick. The classic feel of the Belle Terre design
is enhanced by the absence of housing developments. Jones has
incorporated into the Championship Course's design many of the
"finishing touches" for which he is renowned, such as greens
that undulate moderately rather than taking you a 3-putt roller
coaster ride; and fairway mounding and bunkering that helps
formulate strategy and direct play rather than penalize. With
five sets of tees, this course ensures a fair outing for every
member of the family or foursome.
